Study Groups

The Potomac Craftsmen Fiber Guild study groups are made up of members who share a common interest and want to continue to develop their skills and knowledge. The groups provide not only learning opportunities but also way to connect with others who enjoy fiber arts. All that is required to join a group is a desire and a commitment to learn and explore a group’s topic for the year.

Below are descriptions of each group with contact and meeting information. Other groups may emerge throughout the year. If you would like additional information about a study group or would like to create a new group, please contact the Study Groups Coordinator: studygroups@potomaccraftsmenguild.org

Metal Fiber Study Group

The Metal Fibers study group meets the first Friday of each month at 10:00 alternately in the studio of Cindy Brandt in the Torpedo Factory and in Maryland. We are interested in focusing on innovations to old techniques; examining new technology and helping each other solve problems in our work. We will be choosing a study topic at our meeting in September. All levels of experience are welcome.

First Thursday Clothing Study Group

The First Thursday study group's theme this year is “Something Old Is New Again.” We will be making a new garment out of something else — either a garment we already have, or something we buy and remake. Some members will be remaking T-shirts and others will be designing other garments. Deconstructing, altering, rethinking or designing a pattern are all parts of this topic. The group meets on the first Thursday of each month. This group is currently closed due to the size of the group.

Group G Study Group

Group G is a general weaving study group.  We will be doing monochrome studies this year. Each person will pick a hue they like and will explore all the ranges of it. There can be one other color as an accent. The weave structure and item woven will be of the individual's choosing. This was a suggestion of our member, Carla Gladstone. We meet the third Saturday of each month from 10AM to 12 noon in various members' homes.   We have agreed to limit the membership to 20.

Metro Multishaft Study Group

Designing in the liftplan is the focus for 2007-08. Each month the group will discuss various aspects of designing in the liftplan including: suitable structures, combining structures, continuous and discontinuous motifs, adding borders, text, working with aspect ratios, using Fiberworks PCW to design in the liftplan. The group will start the year with a workshop (optional) with Alice Schlein based on The Woven Pixel: Designing for Jacquard and Dobby Looms Using Photoshop ® by Alice Schlein and Bhakti Ziek. In order to share the results of our explorations, each member will weave a finished item for display at the June Guild meeting plus a sample to include in a notebook for the Guild library.

New members do not need to be advanced weavers. If you have a multishaft loom or an interest in weaving with more than 4 shafts and want to know more about designing your own textiles, this may be the study group for you. Generally, programs are discussion format with a moderator rather than a presenter. The emphasis is on learning, and everyone is encouraged participate. The group meets in various members' homes on the second Friday of the month at 10:30 a.m.

Felting Study Group

The group has decided to work on flat felting for clothing as our study topic for 2007-2008. We will also be working on needle felting designs. The group meets monthly on the third Thursday at 10 am, most meetings are at a member's home in Potomac. Several meetings this year will include special daylong projects.

Knitting Study Group

The knitting study group meets last Wed of the month Sept. thru May at the home of a member. We don’t have a topic of study for next year.

Crochet Study Group

This study group meets on the 4th Friday of the month at the Borders meeting room in White Flint. Members are deciding on a study subject at the September and may involve learning new (to you) stitches.

Weaving 102 Study Group

Weaving 102 is a small group of beginning to intermediate weavers. The group decides on the topics to be discussed. Study topics for 2007-2008 will be selected at the October meeting. This group meets on the third Wednesday of the month form 10:30am to 12:30 pm in various members’ homes usually in the Bethesda area. This group is currently without a facilitator so if you are interested in attending a meeting or joining the group contact Dolly Perkins.

Tapestry Study Group

The tapestry study group is new this year. They will be meeting in September at a location and time to be announced.
